I recently stumbled upon a very interesting online portfolio: www.iamboey.com.
It’s a minimalist site, in every sense of the word, but I like it. Your three options are to look at his journal (a set of interesting, albeit random comics), the news he was featured in, and, perhaps most interestingly, his coffee cup art.

This last one about drawing pictures on coffee cups really struck a chord with me—something that is not only incredibly creative but incredibly smart as well. How many people do you think take part in this craft? Turns out, after a little further investigation, he’s not the only one…but probably not many. He is taking an activity that thousands of people do both for a living and for fun—drawing—and turning into a unique product that appeals to a niche market.

The wheels in my mind kept turning: I’m a graphic/web designer among, literally, thousands of other graphic/web designers. The competition is definitely steep now that everyone and their mother is a “graphic designer”. So the question we need to be asking ourselves is: How can I make my product unique, and thus, appeal to people that would have otherwise looked past my services?

What other niche products exist out there?

WOOOOHOOOOO!!!

I am fully functional, people. And I’m doing it in custom-WordPress-theme style, thanks to many late nights and countless cups of coffee. It was all worth it, though. I learned to develop a customized blogging site that has user-driven capabilities, a skill that I believe is more crucial now than ever.

The simple fact is I love creating clean and structured designs, in particular ones that are minimalist, and I wanted a virtual place to talk about that. So this blog design is supposed to represent my “digital notebook” of ideas.

First, I want to welcome you. No matter who you are or where you are in the world, I’m glad you found your way to this particular blog. But no one likes a lurker, so don’t hesitate to comment if you have new thoughts about my thoughts.

Second, you can expect articles that are design-related, as much as I’d like to ramble about my own life. I come from a multi-disciplined background, so everything is fair game, from graphics, to websites, to illustrations, and everything in between. Enjoy!
